Each [[User Manager/Subscribers | subscriber]] already has an unique field - login. But for security reasons another field - ''Public ID'' is used. '''Note''': In earlier versions (until version 2.9.31) login is used to identify subscriber.

Each [[User Manager/Customers | customer]] has a ''Public ID''. It can be configured in the [[User Manager/Customer page #Customers | customer section]]. But there is no need to specify public ID for each [[User Manager/Customers | customer]]. Because the ''subscriber search'' procedure occurs as follows:
* Search for a [[User Manager/Customers | customer]] with specified ''public ID''. If no [[User Manager/Customers | customer]] found, the default (first) [[User Manager/Subscribers | subscriber]] is used. Otherwise proceed to the next step;
* Search for a [[User Manager/Subscribers | subscriber]] (owner) of the [[User Manager/Customers | customer]] just found. Every [[User Manager/Customers | customer]] has its [[User Manager/Subscribers | subscriber]], so this procedure always finds the result.

So only one [[User Manager/Customers | customer]] per [[User Manager/Subscribers | subscriber]] must have a ''public ID'' defined. Usually the [[User Manager/Subscribers | subscriber]] itself has a ''public ID'' and all the other [[User Manager/Customers | customers]] can live without it.

Public ID for [[User Manager/Customers | customers]] is significant in user sign-up process to use different user prefix and sign-up-credit for different [[User Manager/Customers | customers]].

Only subscribers have [[User Manager/Permissions | permissions]] to edit customers. That means, subscriber must configure public IDs for all sub-customers.
