Rwanda and Tanzania Rural Broadband Case Study

Connecting Schools, Healthcare & Community Centres

During 2017, CableFree was approached by regional partner to provide “lowest cost, high quality” solution for delivering rural Broadband Internet services to schools, healthcare facilities and community centres across rural regions in Rwanda and Tanzania.

CableFree delivers Rural Broadband

The CableFree Solution includes combination of high gain 4G CPE devices plus indoor Mesh WiFi. The CableFree high gain CPEs are mounted high up on poles, which receive strong signals from the closest cell tower – even when there is no signal to mobile devices at ground level.  The high gain and latest-generation chipsets in the CPEs are able to provide strong signals with stable throughput and high capacity, compared to the inherently low gain of mobile handsets.

Inside the buildings we assumed that no CAT5 cabling existed – so that Mesh WiFi was the best way to connect different rooms and even buildings at each location.

Local Content Caching – at a tiny cost

A further request was to reduce the daily data usage and hence cost to operator. At no extra cost we implemented local file storage / server capability to the WiFi Mesh radios to allow content to be cached locally. For example, the teacher in each school could download large files, presentations and multimedia content once, and have a cached local copy for the students to access as needed. This file storage capability in the software was created by simply adding a USB thumb drive inside the Mesh WiFi devices as needed.

Rural Broadband Wireless Summary

CableFree worked with local partners to ensure the project to be a great success in delivering low cost, reliable and fast internet to aid education, healthcare provision and community services in regions where there was previously no broadband, and cell coverage almost non-existent. The high performance, rich feature set and flexible architecture of the CableFree radios was essential to the success of the project
